Jesus prayed for unity in the Garden of Gethsemane. This is one of the most precious passages in the Bible, yet also one of the most misunderstood, and mis-preached. John Stott brings lucidity, by showing us what the text actually says. Many have found this brings an 'aha experience'. Who is the unity between? It is between the apostles and the future church.
We often hear that Christ prayed for unity and therefore we should forget our differences. Or that evangelicals should not create a split by standing for biblical truth. Or that the church's mission will be weakened if we do not change our doctrine with the changing culture.
Yet Christ prayed for the church to be one — ie for the future church to be one with the apostolic church — in order that the world may believe.
This is pure gold.
